Manual Handling Training Overview
Manual Handling Training is designed to prevent workplace injuries by providing employees with the knowledge and skills to perform lifting and manual handling tasks safely and efficiently. Participants will gain insights into the consequences of incorrect lifting techniques on the back and spine structure. By increasing awareness, we aim to reduce injuries by ensuring correct techniques are used.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Define manual handling as per the General Application Regulations 2007.
- Be aware of health & safety legislation.
- Understand the basic anatomy of the musculoskeletal system.
- Apply the 8 principles of safe lifting correctly.

Course Programme
- Manual handling legislation – responsibilities of both employer & employee.
- Dangers of using incorrect manual handling techniques.
- Anatomy of the spine & muscular system.
- Practical sessions in safe manual handling of loads.

Training Methods
Classroom-based presentations combined with practical demonstrations and hands-on practice by learners.

Course Format
- The course requires approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete, including skills practice. While the main content is general, each session is tailored to the learners’ circumstances and requirements. There is no formal exam or assessment; however, full participation is required to receive certification.
- A Certificate of Competence will be issued to all learners who successfully complete & participate fully in this course.

Who Should Attend?
Under the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, it is a legal requirement for all staff involved in manual handling operations to be trained in Manual Handling.

Assessment & Certification
To receive certification for manual handling, all learners must successfully complete both the theory & practical components of the course. Certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue.

Additional Information
- Maximum of 12 learners per session.
- 3 to 4-hour duration for the full standard course.
- Online theory course options are also available through our GTSS Academy Online Platform, with practical sessions conducted by a Care Council Instructor to complete skills practice.

On Completion of the Course, Participants Will:
- Be awarded a HSA Approved Certificate.
- Understand the consequences of incorrect lifting.
- Comprehend the mechanics of the spine and muscular system.
- Master the 8 principles of safe lifting.
